When we were in San Cristobal de las Casas, we decided to go nearby to this town called Zinacantan and it is a great place for people who are looking to see how true natives of the area live like. The locals are so friendly, specially if you buy from them, they'll invite you to their kitchen for a "requeson" and beans taco... handmade... it was incredible. There is also a nice church where I found an altar and a baby Jesus strangely decorated, and everyone seems to wear the same clothes. My sister told us that every 6 years or something, they change the colors and patterns on their clothers, but they do so collectively. Anyways, go visit if you can, it is so nice...
